BioForm Acquires ACI
BioForm Medical has acquired Advanced Cosmetic Intervention, based in Denver. The acquisition provides BioForm with the FDA-approved ACI device, sometimes referred to as the GFX device, which uses radiofrequency to produce heat lesions in nerve tissue. BioForm plans to conduct clinical studies to support an FDA application seeking clearance to market this product for the treatment of frown lines. “We believe this new treatment will offer patients an attractive alternative therapy. Many patients in our consumer research surveys have indicated that they choose not to receive neurotoxin treatment due to fear of losing facial expressions or fear of injections with a toxin,” said Steven Basta, CEO of BioForm Medical. “This device could appeal to many of the same physicians who select Radiesse dermal filler for their patients.”

Added William Maya, CEO of Solana MedSpas, “This alliance allows us to provide our medspa owners and physicians with the most innovative, clinically proven aesthetic systems available.” The Solana Network of Medspa entrepreneurs and office-based physicians has more than 70 sites to date.

Atléan uses a combination of tricalcium phosphate particles (Beta-TCP) suspended in a hyaluronic acid gel. It is currently sold in France and Italy. Over the next 18 months, Stiefel plans to launch Atléan in other parts of Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and it will continue its clinical development to submit the product for FDA approval.

Acne Treatment
The April 2008 issue of Cosmetic Dermatology published a study of CLENZIderm M.D. Acne Therapeutic System by Obagi Medical Products. The study included three clinical trials of patients with mild-to-moderate acne. The CLENZIderm system contains 5% solubilized BPO, which aids its follicular penetration. Results indicated that the three-step system and modified regimens of the system, including the solubilized gel, appear to be more effective than the combination of BPO and clindamycin gel in reducing noninflammatory lesions, and at least as effective as the BPO and clindamycin gel in reducing inflammatory lesions.

Online Resource for Teens
Dermik Laboratories, the dermatology business of sanofi-aventis, has launched a new site for teens and parents, AcneHeroes.com, which provides information on common acne myths, skincare tips and more. To kick off the program, BenzaClin maker sanofi-aventis teamed up with Hannah Montana star Cody Linley and renowned dermatologist Jessica Wu, MD, clinical instructor in dermatology at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. “AcneHeroes.com is a great place for teens to learn about their skin,” said Dr. Wu, who adds that the site offers a section for parents on how to help their teens deal with acne. “Parents need to understand that if left untreated, acne can worsen and have an impact on a teenager’s appearance. There are a variety of over-the-counter and prescription products available, and in my practice, I have found BenzaClin to be a safe and effective prescription acne treatment option for many of my teenage patients.”

For a Good Cause
NIA 24 has teamed up with The Skin Cancer Foundation and more than 1,200 physicians nationwide to raise awareness of the importance of sunscreen in preventing skin cancer. Beginning May 1, consumers who bought NIA 24 Sun Damage Protection 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 received a free trial-size sunscreen along with an educational guide to skin protection published by the foundation. Like all NIA 24 products, this sunscreen contains niacin in the form of a patented molecule, Pro-Niacin, which helps repair and prevent the DNA damage caused by sun exposure. The promotion received this year’s Gold Triangle Award from The American Academy of Dermatology and is available for a limited time only.

Celebrity Treatment
The stars of the E! show Keeping Up With The Kardashians—Kim, Khloe and Kourtney—visited American Laser Centers in Santa Monica, California, where they received treatments for laser hair removal, skin rejuvenation and VelaShape cellulite reduction for a May 11 episode. The FDA-approved VelaShape treatment is a favorite among celebrities before photo shoots and award shows as it helps take inches off while significantly toning skin texture. “VelaShape is proven to reduce thigh circumference by as much as 2 inches per thigh in clinical trials,” said corporate medical director and plastic surgeon David Turok, MD.
